Polypropylene Webbing
Lightweight polypropylene webbing with moisture resistance.
Overview
Polypropylene webbing is a synthetic woven strap manufactured from extruded polypropylene multifilament or monofilament yarns, engineered for applications that require a lightweight, low-cost, and moisture-resistant load-bearing material. The webbing is produced on needle looms in plain, twill, or tubular constructions, with the polypropylene fibers offering inherent resistance to water absorption, mildew, rot, and most acids and alkalis. Because polypropylene has a specific gravity below 1.0, this webbing floats on water and delivers a favorable strength-to-weight ratio compared with heavier synthetic alternatives.
Key Properties & Specifications
- Tensile strength: ranges from approximately 800 lbs (3.6 kN) for narrow 20mm lightweight tapes up to 8,000 lbs (35.6 kN) for heavy-duty high-tenacity constructions, depending on width, thickness, and yarn denier.
- Width range: standard production from 10mm to 100mm, with the most common wholesale widths at 25mm, 38mm, and 50mm; custom widths available on order.
- Thickness: typically 1.0mm to 2.5mm, varying with weave density and intended load rating.
- Elongation at break: generally 15% to 25%, giving moderate stretch under load with acceptable energy absorption for non-critical restraint uses.
- Weight: approximately 0.90 to 0.92 g/cm³ density, making polypropylene webbing roughly 20% lighter than comparable polyester webbing.
- UV resistance: baseline polypropylene has moderate UV tolerance; with added UV stabilizers, service life in direct sunlight extends significantly, though polyester remains superior for prolonged outdoor exposure.
- Abrasion and chemical resistance: good abrasion resistance for its weight class and strong resistance to acids, alkalis, oils, and most solvents; not recommended for prolonged contact with strong oxidizing agents.
- Temperature range: recommended operating range of roughly -20°C to +80°C, with a softening point near 150°C and a melting point around 160–170°C; performance degrades above 100°C, so it is unsuitable for high-heat applications.
- Moisture behavior: near-zero water absorption (below 0.1%), so strength and dimensional stability are retained when wet, and the material dries quickly and resists mildew.
Popular Products
Heavy Duty Polypropylene Webbing
This is the high-tenacity, tightly woven grade built for maximum load capacity, offering tensile strength up to 8,000 lbs in wider profiles. It uses higher-denier yarns and denser weave counts, making it the preferred choice for cargo securing, industrial straps, and heavy equipment restraint where polypropylene's light weight is an advantage.
Woven as a hollow tube rather than a flat solid strap, this construction provides a softer edge, greater flexibility, and the ability to encase cord or shock-absorbing inserts. It is commonly specified for climbing-style slings, harness padding, and applications where reduced abrasion against skin or delicate surfaces is required.
Formulated for wet and saltwater environments, this grade combines polypropylene's natural buoyancy and rot resistance with added UV stabilization for extended outdoor service. It is used for boat covers, dock lines, life-jacket strapping, and other marine hardware where floating, non-absorbent webbing is essential.
This grade balances strength with a refined surface finish and consistent color, produced in the widths most used by bag and case manufacturers. It offers reliable stitch retention and a clean appearance for handles, shoulder straps, reinforcement bands, and closure straps on soft-sided luggage and backpacks.
A cost-effective webbing produced in a wide color range with a smooth hand feel, engineered for collars, leashes, and harnesses. Its moisture resistance and quick-dry properties make it well suited to pet products that encounter water, saliva, and frequent washing, while remaining economical for high-volume production.
Colorfast Polypropylene Webbing
This grade is solution-dyed or treated for superior color retention, resisting fading from washing, friction, and moderate sun exposure. It is targeted at applications where consistent, long-lasting color is a priority, such as branded straps, uniform accessories, and decorative or coded webbing.
Applications
Cargo and load securing: Heavy-duty polypropylene webbing is used for tie-down straps, lashing, and bundling in logistics and warehousing, where its light weight reduces handling fatigue and its moisture resistance suits outdoor and dockside use.
Marine and watersports equipment: Marine-grade webbing serves boat covers, sail ties, dock and mooring accessories, kayak and paddleboard straps, and life-jacket components, taking advantage of buoyancy and resistance to rot and saltwater.
Bags, luggage, and backpacks: Luggage-grade webbing supplies carry handles, adjustable shoulder straps, compression straps, and internal reinforcement, providing a consistent finish and dependable strength for soft goods manufacturers.
Pet products: Pet-grade webbing is manufactured into collars, leashes, and harnesses across a broad color range, offering an affordable, washable, and quick-drying material for high-volume pet accessory production.
Outdoor and recreational gear: Tubular and stabilized flat webbing is used in slings, tie-outs, tent and tarp straps, and camping accessories where flexibility, low weight, and moisture resistance matter more than maximum UV longevity.
Industrial and general assembly: Standard polypropylene webbing is applied to strapping, edge binding, safety barriers, furniture strapping, and light restraint systems, serving as a low-cost alternative where full polyester or nylon performance is not required.
Customization & Wholesale
WebbingMaker produces polypropylene webbing to order for global wholesale and bulk buyers, with manufacturing capacity suited to both trial runs and large recurring contracts.
Minimum order quantity: standard MOQ is 500 meters per color per specification for in-stock constructions; custom widths, weaves, or special formulations typically start at 3,000 to 5,000 meters per specification. Sample lengths and pre-production swatches are available for evaluation before bulk commitment.
Custom widths and thickness: any width from 10mm to 100mm can be woven to specification, with custom thickness and weave density adjusted to meet target tensile ratings.
Colors: a wide standard color card is maintained, and custom color matching to Pantone or physical samples is available for orders meeting the custom-batch MOQ. Solution-dyed and colorfast options are offered where long-term color retention is required.
Printing and branding: custom logo printing, repeated text, and pattern printing are available via silk-screen and heat-transfer methods, supporting private-label and branded webbing for OEM customers.
OEM and ODM: full OEM service covers customer-supplied specifications, and ODM support is available for buyers who need assistance developing a webbing spec to meet a target strength, weight, width, and cost. Technical data sheets and load-test reports can be provided on request.
Lead time: standard stock items ship within 7 to 15 days after order confirmation; custom-woven, custom-colored, or printed orders typically require 20 to 35 days depending on volume and complexity. Production scheduling for large recurring contracts can be arranged in advance.
Export capabilities: WebbingMaker exports worldwide, with experience shipping to North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. Standard packing is on rolls or spools, boxed and palletized for container shipment, with FOB, CIF, and other Incoterms supported. Documentation for customs clearance, including commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin, is prepared for each shipment, and third-party quality inspection can be accommodated on request.
