Elastic Webbing
Stretchable elastic webbing for garments, medical and sports applications.
Overview
Elastic webbing is a class of stretchable narrow fabric engineered to recover its original dimensions after repeated tension and release. It is constructed by weaving or knitting textile yarns (polyester, nylon, or cotton) around a core or filler of natural rubber or spandex/elastane elastomer, which provides the recoverable stretch. The ratio of elastomer to face yarn, along with the construction method, determines the elongation, holding power, and hand-feel of the finished webbing.
Key Properties & Specifications
- Width range: 6mm to 100mm standard; special orders available up to 150mm for heavy-duty grades.
- Thickness: 0.8mm to 3.5mm depending on construction, with knitted grades running thinner (0.8mm-1.5mm) and heavy-duty woven grades running 2.0mm-3.5mm.
- Elongation at working load: 80% to 180%; maximum elongation before permanent set typically 200%-250%.
- Tensile / break strength: light knitted grades 150-400 lbs (0.7-1.8 kN); standard woven grades 800-2,500 lbs (3.6-11 kN); heavy-duty grades up to 8,000 lbs (35.6 kN) for wide multi-rubber-core constructions.
- Recovery rate: 90%-98% return to original length after 10,000 stretch cycles at working load.
- Temperature range: continuous service -30°C to 90°C; rubber-core grades limited to 70°C, spandex-core grades stable to 90°C.
- Abrasion resistance: 15,000-30,000 cycles (Martindale) for polyester-faced constructions.
- UV and chemical resistance: polyester face yarn retains 85%+ tensile strength after 500 hours UV exposure; resistant to dilute acids, alkalis, and most solvents. Rubber cores degrade with prolonged oil/ozone exposure; spandex cores preferred for chemical environments.
- Colorfastness: Grade 4-5 to washing and rubbing (AATCC / ISO 105) on dyed polyester grades.
Popular Products
Built with multiple rubber or high-tenacity elastane cores wrapped in dense polyester, this grade carries the highest load ratings in the category, up to 8,000 lbs break strength in wide constructions. It is used where high holding power and repeated heavy tensioning are required, such as tie-downs, industrial fastening, and load-bearing straps.
Produced on knitting machines, this webbing has a soft, flexible hand and higher elongation (up to 180%) with a smooth, non-abrasive surface. Its softness and lower cost make it the default choice for garment waistbands, underwear, and lightweight apparel where comfort against skin matters more than load rating.
Woven on shuttle or needle looms, this construction delivers tighter, more stable edges and higher tensile strength (800-2,500 lbs) than knitted equivalents. It resists curling and fraying, making it suitable for structured garments, medical supports, and applications requiring dimensional stability under load.
This grade uses jacquard weaving to integrate logos, brand names, patterns, or multi-color designs directly into the webbing structure rather than printing them on the surface. It is favored by brands for waistbands and visible trim because the woven-in design does not wash out or peel and adds a premium finish.
Manufactured with silicone gripper strips or a coated backing applied to one face, this webbing resists sliding against skin or fabric. It is used in sportswear leg bands, medical compression, and any application where the elastic must stay in position under movement.
Known as FOE, this thin, soft webbing has a central crease line that allows it to fold cleanly over a raw fabric edge, finishing and binding it in a single operation. It is widely used in lingerie, activewear, baby garments, and headwear where a soft, decorative, and functional edge is needed.
Applications
Garment manufacturing: waistbands for trousers, skirts, underwear, and sportswear, as well as cuffs, straps, and shoulder elastics. Knitted and jacquard grades dominate here for comfort and branding, while FOE finishes edges on lightweight and stretch fabrics.
Medical and orthopedic supports: compression bandages, braces, orthopedic belts, and post-surgical supports rely on woven and non-slip grades for controlled elongation, consistent compression, and secure positioning on the body over extended wear.
Sports and fitness equipment: resistance bands, gym straps, protective gear straps, and fitness apparel use woven and heavy-duty grades selected for defined stretch limits and high cycle recovery under repeated tension.
Furniture and upholstery: seating suspension, cushion retention, and mattress edge support use wide woven elastic to provide flexible load support in place of springs, taking advantage of the high recovery rate over long service life.
Industrial and cargo fastening: tie-downs, bundling straps, equipment covers, and load restraints use heavy-duty grades where the combination of high break strength (up to 8,000 lbs) and elastic take-up prevents shock loading and keeps loads secured.
Footwear and accessories: gussets in slip-on shoes, boot panels, hat bands, watch straps, and bag closures use narrow knitted and woven grades where compact width, soft hand, and consistent recovery are required.
Customization & Wholesale
WebbingMaker supplies elastic webbing to global wholesale and bulk buyers with full customization across construction, dimensions, and finishing.
Minimum order quantity: standard MOQ is 500m per color per specification for stock constructions. Custom jacquard designs and specialty non-slip or coated grades carry an MOQ of 1,000m to 3,000m depending on complexity, as loom setup and pattern programming require dedicated production runs.
Custom widths: any width from 6mm to 100mm is available as standard, with wide heavy-duty constructions produced to 150mm on request. Width tolerance is held to ±0.5mm on narrow grades and ±1.0mm on wide grades.
Colors and dyeing: standard color-card matching is offered at no additional tooling cost, and Pantone-matched custom dyeing is available with a per-color MOQ of 500m. Yarn-dyed and solution-dyed options are available for improved colorfastness in outdoor and high-wash applications.
Custom printing and branding: options include jacquard-woven logos and patterns, silicone-printed branding, heat-transfer printing, and screen printing along the webbing face. Jacquard branding is recommended for durability, while surface printing offers lower setup cost for shorter runs.
Elongation and strength tuning: elongation percentage, holding power, and break strength are adjustable by changing core count, elastomer type (natural rubber versus spandex/elastane), and face yarn density, allowing the webbing to be matched to a defined working load and stretch specification.
OEM and ODM: full OEM production to buyer specifications and drawings is supported, along with ODM development where WebbingMaker's technical team assists with construction design, material selection, and sampling. Pre-production samples are provided for approval before bulk runs.
Lead time: sampling takes 5-10 working days. Bulk production lead time is 15-25 days for standard constructions and 25-40 days for custom jacquard or coated grades, depending on order volume and finishing requirements.
Export capabilities: WebbingMaker exports worldwide with experience shipping to North America, Europe, South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Products are supplied to relevant standards including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification for skin-contact and garment applications on request. Packaging is provided on rolls, spools, or cut-to-length according to buyer requirements, with FOB, CIF, and other Incoterms supported, and consolidated container and LCL shipping arranged for mixed-specification orders.
